3 Tips For Staying Out Of Trouble While Out On Bail

by Leo Austin

A bail bondsman can get you out of jail if you've been arrested, but it's up to you to keep yourself free after that. If you've never been arrested before, you might be surprised by some of the restrictions that you have to deal with when you're released on bail. The court can set any number of conditions – you may be required to avoid certain people, places, and activities, and you may not be allowed to leave your local area while you wait for your trial. These restrictions may range from slightly inconvenient to extremely burdensome, but either way, a violation could send you back to jail. Take a look at some tips for your time out on bail that will help you stay out of trouble.

Focus on Your Defense

One of the best ways to use your time while you're out on bail is building your defense against the charges that got you arrested. You'll want to either be found not guilty at trial, or work out the best possible plea deal, and either way you'll need a good legal strategy.

No matter what sort of release restrictions the judge set, spending time with your lawyer and working on your legal defense is something you'll certainly be allowed to do. Throwing yourself into your defense is a safe activity that's in your best interest.

Ask for an Exception If Needed

In some cases, you may be eligible for an exception to your bail restrictions. For example, if the judge suspended your driver's license, but you have to be able to drive to get to work, you may be able to apply for a conditional license that will allow you to drive only during certain hours of the day. Or if you've been instructed not to leave the county, you may be able to ask the judge to allow you to leave in order to deal with a medical emergency in the family.

If your bail restrictions are interfering with your job or your family obligations, ask the court what you can do to have the restrictions loosened or get an exemption. You may need to fill out certain forms or write a letter to the judge handling your case.

Seek Self-Improvement

One great way to spend your time when you're on bail is focusing on some kind of self-improvement. You might take a class, spend some time volunteering, or attend counseling.

Spending your time out on bail doing something to improve yourself will look good to a judge or jury, and may make a difference in the outcome of your case. Plus, it will help you feel better and more productive. No matter what your legal or personal situation is, everyone has some room for improvement. This may be a good time to spend working on yourself.

If you focus on spending your time out on bail constructively, you're less likely to get into further trouble, and more likely to see a positive outcome when it's time for your trial.
